Australian animals

Australian animals as a group are unique. Our marsupials, with their young snuggling up in the mother's pouch, and the monotremes which lay eggs and then suckle their young all confounded early European settlers and continue to amaze us today. These mammals range in size from two meter high old man kangaroos down to pigmy possums which could snuggle into a child's hand.

Australian animals

This young brushtail possum in a fruit tree is interrupted as it hunts for food at night. One of our most common marsupials, the brushie is about the size of a large cat and although completely harmless it can be a nuisance in the garden.
